Residential care costs can run to thousands of pounds a month, and the need for it is difficult to predict. We help families plan ahead so that if care is needed, the financial decisions have already been thought through.

In Northern Ireland, the Health and Social Care Trust carries out a financial assessment before it contributes to care home fees. Anyone with capital above £23,250 pays the full cost, and that can include the family home once the first 12 weeks of a permanent placement have passed.

Free NI Care Guide

Our guide sets out how care is assessed and paid for in Northern Ireland: the needs assessment, the financial assessment, the capital limits, and how property is treated. It’s general information rather than advice, and it doesn’t ask for your details.

Why plan early

There’s no statutory deferred payment scheme in Northern Ireland. So families who leave it late can face quick decisions about how to raise the money, sometimes while a parent waits in hospital for a placement. Planning earlier keeps more options open and gives time to talk them through as a family.

How we help

  • explaining what the Trust will and won’t pay for in your situation
  • modelling how long savings, income and property could cover care costs
  • advising on ways to fund care, including immediate needs annuities where suitable
  • looking at the effect on the rest of the estate
  • supporting adult children making decisions for a parent

Care navigation (partner service)

My Care Consultant runs My Care Hub, a free service for people who need care or look after someone who does. It helps with finding suitable care and understanding what support is available. It’s a separate company offering care navigation, not financial advice.

This page is general information, not advice. Care funding rules, thresholds and benefit entitlements depend on individual circumstances and can change.
